Why Do My Teeth Keep Breaking? Uncovering the Hidden Cause Behind Locked Jaws

The journey to a healthy smile isn’t always a straight line—sometimes it’s a puzzle that requires unravelling layer by layer.

A patient walked into Oral Care Dental Clinic in Wakad in deep distress. He came to us with a severe, painful locked jaw that had occurred right after having a fractured tooth removed. To make matters worse, this wasn’t an isolated incident; he had inexplicably fractured three molars over the course of just one year.

Uncovering the Root Cause

During his comprehensive examination, it became clear that the fractured teeth and the sudden locked jaw were connected. The core issue wasn’t just in his teeth—it was in his temporomandibular joint (TMJ). His articular disc had displaced, causing his muscles to spasm and lock his jaw in place to protect the joint. The continuous stress from an improper bite and joint misalignment had also been causing his molars to shatter under the pressure.

The Step-by-Step Healing Process

To give him long-term relief and restore his bite, we mapped out a precise, multi-phase treatment plan:

  • Phase 1: Jaw Deprogramming — We immediately fitted him with a deprogrammer to wear day and night. This device allowed his overworked jaw muscles to relax, gradually relieving the painful spasms and allowing his jaw to start opening again.
  • Phase 2: Joint Stabilization — Once his muscles settled, we transitioned him to a Centric Relation (CR) splint. This custom appliance guided his displaced disc back into its proper anatomical position.
  • Phase 3: Restoring Full Mobility — As his jaw regained its full range of motion, we initially initiated orthodontic braces to correct his bite alignment.
  • Phase 4: Full Mouth Rehabilitation — Midway through orthodontic therapy, the patient requested an alternative to long-term braces. Respecting his preference, we adapted the plan and transitioned to a Full Mouth Rehabilitation using custom crowns. This approach permanently rebuilt his bite, protected his natural teeth, and restored full chewing function along with a balanced cosmetic result.

The Outcome

Today, the transformation is complete. He no longer experiences jaw locking, joint pain, or fractured teeth, and his bite is fully stabilized. Best of all, he walks out of our clinic with a strong, functional, and aesthetically pleasing smile he is truly proud of.

When complex dental issues arise, treating the symptoms is never enough—addressing the underlying joint function is the key to lasting health.
